Quick answer: From stone cold, a standard 180L electric cylinder takes about 3½ hours to reheat on a 3kW element. Smaller tanks are quicker; bigger tanks and 2kW elements take longer; and winter adds a bit on top. Heat pumps are slower to recover but far cheaper to run, and gas continuous flow is instant. Note: from fully cold, assuming a healthy element. Winter’s colder incoming water can add roughly 15–20% — and up to about 25% in the coldest South Island areas (Central Otago, Southland), where mains can fall below 8°C. A top-up after a shower is far quicker than a full reheat.

What affects reheat time
- Element wattage — a 3kW element heats about 50% faster than a 2kW one — the biggest lever after tank size.
- Tank size — more litres, more water to heat. A 300L holds over twice a 135L, so it takes over twice as long.
- Incoming water temperature — colder mains water in winter means a bigger climb to 60°C, so reheats slow down in the cold months.
- Ripple control — many NZ homes are on ripple control, where the lines company switches the element off at peak demand. Normal, but it stretches out a reheat.
- Element health — sediment, scale, or an element starting to fail is a common reason a cylinder “suddenly” takes far longer than it used to.
Heat pump vs electric recovery
Heat pump cylinders recover more slowly than a 3kW element because they move heat from the air rather than forcing it in with a high-wattage element, and they slow further in the cold. The upside is they use up to 75% less power and are designed to run steadily (often off-peak), keeping the tank topped up rather than racing to reheat. If your household regularly drains the tank, the fix is usually a bigger cylinder — not just a faster reheat. “I just ran out” — how long to wait
You rarely wait the full from-cold time. After a couple of showers the tank is only part-empty, so the element just tops it back up — often 20–40 minutes for enough for another shower on a 3kW element, not hours. Hot water also stratifies — the hottest water sits at the top and is drawn first — so as the tank reheats the tempering valve blends in less cold water, and a usable shower often arrives well before the tank reaches a full 60°C. The full times above only apply when the tank has been fully drained or gone completely cold (switched off, or a holiday home left off for weeks). On ripple control at peak, the top-up may wait until the power’s back on.
How to stop running out
- Right-size the cylinder for your household (see the size table) — a tank that’s simply too small is the most common cause.
- Move from a 2kW to a 3kW element if your wiring allows — faster recovery for a small cost.
- On ripple control and often caught short? Ask about your controlled-supply setup or a top-up schedule.
- Get the element and thermostat checked if reheats have got slower over time — usually sediment or a failing element (see hot water cylinder repairs).
