Mains Pressure Cylinders

Mains pressure cylinders typically range from $900 to $4,000 incl. GST, with price driven mainly by tank size (135L–300L) and brand. This is the standard choice for most Auckland homes built or renovated in the last 20 years.

Strong, even flow to multiple outlets showers and taps run at full pressure simultaneously.
The standard for modern NZ homes and required for most new-build consents.

Wide brand and size range, so there's a direct swap-in replacement for almost any existing setup.

Low Pressure Cylinders

Low-pressure cylinders typically cost $1,000–$3,000 including GST. They’re often the cheapest like-for-like replacement because existing pipework can usually be reused, reducing installation work. However, tempering valves are now standard on low-pressure installations, which can bring the total cost closer to a mains-pressure upgrade in some cases.  They’re a good fit for older homes with gravity-fed header tanks, with wetback options also available depending on the system and installation.

Cost-effective replacement — Reuse existing pipework to keep costs down.
Ideal for older homes — Suits gravity-fed header tank systems.
Simple and reliable — Fewer components mean less maintenance.

Heat Pump Hot Water Cylinders

Heat pump cylinders typically cost $3,700–$6,500+ including GST, making them the highest upfront-cost option. However, they can use up to 70% less power than a standard electric cylinder, which can help recover the price difference over time.

Uses up to 70% less power than a standard electric cylinder.
5–7 year warranty depending on the heat pump model.
0–1% green loans may help make the upfront cost more affordable.

Gas Continuous Flow Water Heaters

Gas continuous flow units are priced from $1,300 to $2,900 incl. GST, making them one of the more affordable options, particularly for smaller households. They provide hot water continuously while the gas supply lasts, with flow rates typically ranging from 10L–27L per minute.

Continuous hot water — Hot water keeps flowing while the gas supply lasts.
Compact wall-mounted unit — Frees up valuable cupboard and roof space.
No electricity needed — Works without mains power, ideal for some homes.

Important note: Gas continuous flow units can be installed indoors or outdoors and can run on LPG or natural gas. They’re less common due to the cost of installing or connecting a gas line, particularly where one isn’t already available.

SOLAR-COMPATIBLE HOT WATER CYLINDERS

Solar-compatible electric hot water cylinders typically range from $1,300 to $2,500+ incl. GST, depending on size and features. These cylinders are designed with dedicated solar connections, allowing solar hot water or heat pump technology to be added later. They operate as standard electric cylinders until an external heat source is connected. It does not mean the cylinder comes with solar panels or that a solar system is installed. Larger 250L–300L models can also be paired with a split-system heat pump at a later date, with Panasonic split systems being a popular option.

We install solar-compatible cylinders but do not install solar panels or roof-mounted hot water systems.

Solar-ready connections for future solar or heat pump upgrades.
Works as a standard cylinder until external systems are added.
Flexible future-proof option for lower running costs over time.

Wetback Hot Water Cylinder

Wetback-compatible cylinders start around $2,400 and go up to $4,700 incl. GST, depending on tank size and coil configuration. These are built to connect to a wood burner, making them popular for rural properties and homes that already heat with a fire.

Pairs directly with a wood burner to heat water for free while the fire's going.
Well suited to rural or off-grid properties with limited grid reliance.
Can still run on electric element as backup when the fire's not lit.
